William Wordsworth
1770-1850
William Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770 in Cockermouth, Cumbria, England. In the early years of life, he lost his mother. The loss influenced many of Wordsworth's later poems. He attended Hawkshead Grammar School where he found his love for poetry. While attending, Wordsworth's father died leaving him and his four siblings to fend for themselves. After the grammar school, Wordsworth decided to go to St. John's College where he would continue his studies of poetry. He toured Europe during his final semester at St. John's college and acquaintanced himself with the French Revolution. The Revolution influenced Wordsworth's later poems with his new found interest and sympathy for the "common man."
